Times Tables

The times table is an important item in a teacher’s toolkit which helps elementary school children learn how to multiply. In the same way as other math topics, multiplication can be a challenging concept to teach and learn.

Throughout the years, teachers have come up with various ideas on how to make multiplication easier to understand. One of the best ways to start, is with multiple additions. Most children in the second or third grade know how to add numbers, so it links multiplication with something familiar to them. Eventually, thought, they will have to memorize the times table.

Times tables for individual numbers have certain patterns that makes them easier to learn by heart. For example, in the 10 times table you only need to add 0 at the end of the other number. In the table of 2 the result can be known by simply using skip counting. Another example is the 5 times table where the last digit of the product is either 0 or 5.
